Washing tips that keep colours bright past wash thirty

We wash-test every fabric we sell, so we’ve learned a few things about what kills kids’ clothes — and it’s usually the wash, not the wear.

Cold water, always

Hot water opens cotton fibres and lets dye escape. Cold water gets kids’ clothes just as clean (with a decent detergent) and keeps colours locked in. It also costs less if you heat water for laundry.

Wash inside out

Most fading happens from friction — clothes rubbing against each other in the machine or against the scrubbing board. Turn everything inside out and the outside surface stays fresh.

The sun: best friend and worst enemy

Sunshine is free drying and kills germs — but direct afternoon sun bleaches colour fast. Dry brights and darks in the shade or inside out, and give whites the full sun treatment.

Skip the bleach on colours

For stains on coloured fabric, a paste of detergent and cold water plus an hour of patience beats bleach every time. Bleach doesn’t remove most kid stains anyway — it just removes the colour around them.

Do these four things and a good cotton tee will still look right when it’s handed down to the next child. That’s the whole point.
