Cold mornings, hot afternoons, dust everywhere. Harmattan asks one outfit to do three jobs, and most school bags don’t have room for spare clothes. The answer is three thin layers instead of one thick one.
Layer one: a breathable cotton tee
This is the layer that stays on all day, so it has to breathe. Soft cotton keeps a child comfortable when the sun comes up and the temperature jumps.
Layer two: a light knit or cardigan
A crew knit or cardigan handles the 6am chill on the way to school. Pick one that’s easy for the child to take off alone — by 10am they’ll want it off, and no teacher has time to help thirty kids undress.
Layer three: something zipped for the coldest mornings
On the really cold weeks, a zip hoodie over the knit does the job. Zips beat pullovers here: easier on, easier off, and it survives being stuffed into a school bag.
The dust problem
Harmattan dust settles into everything. Stick to colourfast, washable fabrics and wash inside out. Skip anything ‘dry clean only’ until April — nobody has time for that.
